Book directOn the map
São Conrado is the westernmost beach neighbourhood of Rio's Zona Sul, on the Atlantic coast just past Leblon. Leaving Leblon, the coast road curves around the foot of Morro Dois Irmãos, passes Vidigal and comes out in São Conrado's valley. Further west, the Joá headland stands between São Conrado and Barra da Tijuca.
Behind the beach the land climbs quickly to Pedra da Gávea, the flat-topped granite mountain of about 840 metres that stands over the bairro, with Pedra Bonita, the hang-gliders' launch point, beside it. Both are inside the Parque Nacional da Tijuca. On a map, the middle of São Conrado sits at about 22.99° south and 43.27° west.
São Conrado shares borders with seven bairros: Vidigal and Rocinha to the east, Gávea on the far side of the mountain, Alto da Boa Vista and Itanhangá behind it, and Joá and Barra da Tijuca to the west. Rocinha, one of Brazil's largest favelas, covers the hillside between São Conrado and Gávea.
Zona Sul or Zona Oeste?
São Conrado is in the Zona Sul. In the city's administrative data it is bairro 031, part of the Lagoa administrative region (RA VI) together with Ipanema, Leblon, Lagoa, Jardim Botânico, Gávea and Vidigal. It also belongs to Planning Area 2, which brings together the Zona Sul and Greater Tijuca.
The question comes up because of the map. São Conrado lies west of Leblon, and the motorway out of it carries straight on to Barra da Tijuca, which many people still call Zona Oeste. Barra and Joá sit in Planning Area 4, and a city law published on 9 September 2025 placed them, with Recreio, Jacarepaguá and other bairros, in a newly named Zona Sudoeste.
Joá, São Conrado's neighbour to the west, is in that new zone. São Conrado itself stays with the Zona Sul bairros in the city's census tables and planning documents, and if a form or a booking site asks for the zone, Zona Sul is the right answer.
Size and population
São Conrado covers about 6.5 square kilometres (648.86 hectares), the largest area of any bairro in the Lagoa region. It also has the fewest residents: the 2022 census counted 9,739 people in 4,645 dwellings, down from 10,980 people in 2010.
Leblon, next door, has almost four times as many residents (37,709) on a third of the area. Gávea, with 14,176 residents, and Vidigal, with 15,112, each fit on well under half of São Conrado's area. São Conrado works out at about 1,500 people per square kilometre against roughly 17,500 in Leblon, the lowest density of the seven bairros in the region.
Postcodes
Brazilian postcodes are called CEPs, and almost every street in São Conrado starts with 22610. The beachfront Avenida Prefeito Mendes de Morais is 22610-095, Avenida Aquarela do Brasil is 22610-010, and the São Conrado stretch of the Estrada da Gávea uses 22610-001 on the odd-numbered side and 22610-002 on the even side.
Avenida Niemeyer is the exception: from number 551 to its end in São Conrado, the CEP is 22450-221. That puts the full range for the bairro at 22450-221 to 22610-989, and the Fashion Mall has its own CEP, 22610-901. When you send an address to a driver or a delivery app, give the street, the number and the CEP together.
The roads in and out
Three routes lead into São Conrado. From Leblon, Avenida Niemeyer runs about 4.8 kilometres along the cliffs at the foot of Morro Dois Irmãos, past Vidigal, to the Estrada da Gávea in São Conrado. It has one lane each way, it is the only road into Vidigal, and it is the scenic, slower choice.
The quicker way to Gávea and the Lagoa is the Autoestrada Lagoa-Barra, officially the Autoestrada Engenheiro Fernando Mac Dowell, which runs about 10 kilometres from Gávea to Barra. Its Túnel Zuzu Angel, about 1.5 kilometres long and opened in 1971, carries two lanes in each direction under Morro Dois Irmãos between Gávea and São Conrado. If the city closes Avenida Niemeyer in very strong wind or heavy rain, traffic runs through this tunnel instead, and your driver will know before you set off.
Westward, the same motorway leaves São Conrado on the Elevado do Joá, officially the Elevado das Bandeiras: a two-level viaduct and a chain of tunnels along the Joá cliffs above the sea, opened in 1971. A second, single-level structure alongside it opened on 28 May 2016, before the Olympics, and the city expected it to add about 30 percent to the road's capacity there. Barra's Jardim Oceânico is about ten minutes away.
The metro station
São Conrado has its own stop on Metro Line 4, named São Conrado. The line was inaugurated on 30 July 2016, carried Olympic ticket holders first, and opened to everyone on 19 September 2016. The station is underground at the foot of the Rocinha hill, beside the Estrada da Gávea, with three entrances: one on the Rocinha side, one on Avenida Aquarela do Brasil and one on the Estrada da Gávea.
One stop west is Jardim Oceânico in Barra, the end of the 16-kilometre line. Eastbound, trains run under the mountain to Antero de Quental in Leblon, then Jardim de Alah, Nossa Senhora da Paz and General Osório in Ipanema, where Line 1 begins its run through Copacabana to the centre. The ride from Barra to Ipanema takes about 13 minutes, so from São Conrado it is shorter.
On average, about 11,000 passengers a day board at São Conrado. A Gávea station, planned between São Conrado and Leblon, is still being built. For two people heading to Ipanema for an afternoon, the metro saves a hunt for parking; for a group of ten, a driver from door to door is usually simpler.
Drive times
Distances on this side of Rio are short, and traffic decides the time. In light traffic, Barra da Tijuca (Jardim Oceânico) is about 5 km and 10 minutes west of São Conrado, and Praça Santos Dumont in Gávea about 7.5 km and 10 minutes through the tunnel. Leblon is about 7 km and 10 to 15 minutes east, Ipanema about 9 km and 15 to 20 minutes, and Copacabana about 12 km and 20 to 30 minutes.
For the centre and the airports, allow more. Santos Dumont, the domestic airport on the bay, is about 20 km and 30 to 40 minutes away, and the old centre around Praça XV about 22 km and 30 to 40 minutes. Galeão (GIG), the international airport, is about 30 km and around 45 minutes.
Weekday rush hours and sunny summer weekends stretch all of these, so leave a margin before a flight. The getting around guide covers airport pickups, drivers and car hire.
Landmarks inside the bairro
Most of São Conrado's landmarks sit on two roads. The Estrada da Gávea is the address of the metro station, the São Conrado Fashion Mall at number 899, with its shops, restaurants, cinema and theatre, and the Gávea Golf & Country Club at number 800. Along the sea, Avenida Prefeito Mendes de Morais follows the beach west to Praia do Pepino, the stretch at the far end where the hang-gliders and paragliders come down.
Behind the beach, the Estrada das Canoas climbs into the forest towards the Estrada da Pedra Bonita and the free-flight ramp. For a driver or a taxi, the Fashion Mall and the metro station are the easiest reference points in the bairro.
Where the villa sits
The villa is in São Conrado, inside a private gated estate on the slope above the beach, with Pedra da Gávea directly behind. The sand is minutes downhill, Leblon and Ipanema are about 15 minutes east by car, and Galeão is about 45 minutes away. Through Art de Vivre's concierge, an English-speaking driver can meet your flight and bring you in.
