We run a five-suite villa with an infinity pool above São Conrado beach, and its rates and live availability are on the Art de Vivre booking page.
Book directThe São Conrado Fashion Mall
The nearest shops are at the São Conrado Fashion Mall, at Estrada da Gávea 899, a few minutes from the villa by car and about 1.4 kilometres on foot from São Conrado metro station. It opened in October 1982 with 157 stores and spent its early decades as a symbol of luxury and exclusivity in Rio.
Today it is a calmer place, with just over 60 stores open in mid-2024, and it has been used for events such as CasaCor Rio, the interiors show, which filled its three floors with 45 rooms and spaces from 24 September to 24 November 2024.
The mall makes an easy evening close to the villa. There is a Kinoplex Platinum cinema, the Teatro Fashion Mall for plays for adults and children, and restaurants including Gurumê, Gratzi, Bistrot Chez L'Ami Martin and the newer Sanca Lev. In October 2026 it opened from 10:00 to 22:00, Monday to Saturday, and from 14:00 to 20:00 on Sundays.
The mall keeps a full events calendar. Events listed for October and November 2026 include the Moda Prime OFF fashion event and the Gastronomia Sem Fronteiras food festival, so check its programme before planning an evening.
Shopping Leblon and Rio Design Leblon
About 8 kilometres and 15 minutes east, Leblon has two malls close together. Shopping Leblon, at Avenida Afrânio de Melo Franco 290, opened in 2006 and is an upmarket fashion mall with international designers and local boutiques.
A short walk away, Rio Design Leblon, at Avenida Ataulfo de Paiva 270, has been open since 1983 and is run by the ALLOS group; it brings together fashion shops, restaurants and wellness services. Leblon's restaurants are nearby, and the dining guide covers where to stop for lunch.
Shopping da Gávea
Through the Túnel Zuzu Angel, about ten minutes from São Conrado, the Shopping da Gávea, at Rua Marquês de São Vicente 52, opened on 26 May 1975. It is a long-established neighbourhood mall with four theatres, the Teatro dos Quatro, Teatro das Artes, Teatro Clara Nunes and Teatro Vannucci, the last of them on the third floor, so an afternoon there can run straight into a play in the evening.
In the 1970s the mall housed the Frenetic Dancing Days discotheque, and its theatres have staged plays in 2025 and 2026. The Gávea guide covers the rest of the bairro, including the Jockey Club and the Planetário.
VillageMall and BarraShopping
West over the Elevado do Joá, Barra da Tijuca has the large malls of Avenida das Américas, about 11 kilometres and 15 to 20 minutes from São Conrado in light traffic. VillageMall, at Avenida das Américas 3900, opened on 4 December 2012 with the aim of being Rio's first designer-label mall. It has three floors and 144 stores, received about 3 million visitors in 2025, and its terrace restaurants look over the Lagoa da Tijuca.
A little further along the avenue, BarraShopping, at Avenida das Américas 4666, opened on 26 October 1981 and now has more than 700 stores on about 77,000 square metres of shopping space. Its New York City Center annexe, at number 5000, has a large UCI cinema with an IMAX screen, and VillageMall belongs to the same complex, with both run by the Multiplan group.
Barra suits a big shopping trip or a wet day, when a few hours under one roof is welcome, and it is also on the way back from the beaches further west. The rainy-day guide has other ideas for wet days.
Ipanema's shopping streets
For shops on the street rather than in a mall, go to Ipanema. Rua Visconde de Pirajá, the bairro's main shopping street, has fashion, swimwear, jewellery, bag and flip-flop shops along much of its length, and Rua Garcia d'Ávila, which crosses it, has swimwear and jewellery shops too.
Ipanema is about 10 kilometres and 15 to 20 minutes from São Conrado, and parking is tight, so a drop-off by the villa's driver works best. A late shopping afternoon in Ipanema can end at the rock for the sunset at Arpoador.
Brazilian labels worth knowing
Osklen was founded in 1989 by Oskar Metsavaht, who opened the first shop in Búzios; the first Rio shop followed two years later. The label is known for sporty luxury and sustainable materials such as organic cotton and pirarucu fish leather, and Forbes Brasil's June 2026 profile describes a new phase for the brand, with Metsavaht's children now working alongside him.
Farm Rio began in 1997 as a stand at the Babilônia Feira Hype fair in Rio, set up by Kátia Barros and Marcello Bastos. It is known for bright colours and bold prints and is popular with Cariocas.
Havaianas, the rubber flip-flops made by Alpargatas since 1962, took their design from Japanese zori sandals worn in Hawaii, and their name means "Hawaiians". They are the classic Brazilian souvenir and come in every colour; the concierge can point you to the nearest shop for each of these names.
The Feira Hippie in Ipanema
On Sundays the Feira Hippie de Ipanema fills Praça General Osório with dozens of stalls of handicrafts and art, made from glass, ceramics, wood, stones, silver, seeds and fabric. It began in 1968, is recognised as part of Rio's intangible heritage, and in 2025 marked its 57th year with a food fair and live music on the square, a format the organisers repeat through the year.
Stalls open from about 8:00, and listings differ on closing time, from 16:00 in some guidebooks to 20:00 in the city's own listing, so go in the morning for the best choice. Praça General Osório is also the General Osório metro station, at the Ipanema end of Line 4, so the fair is an easy trip from São Conrado station.
Souvenirs and gifts
Swimwear is a classic Rio gift. Brazilian beachwear labels usually keep their own shops in Leblon and Ipanema, with Rua Garcia d'Ávila and Rua Visconde de Pirajá good places to start. Sizes vary between brands, so try things on rather than guessing.
Cachaça, the cane spirit behind the caipirinha, is easy: supermarkets carry the well-known brands, such as Seleta and Ypioca, and specialist bars and shops stock the small artisanal ones. Brazilian chocolate brands such as Cacau Show have their own shops around the city, and Granado, a Rio house founded in 1870, makes natural soaps and body butters that pack easily.
Football shirts are the other classic. Official ones are sold in sports shops and the clubs' own stores, while the copies sold on the beach and in the street cost less and are not official.
Practical notes from the villa
Brazil does not yet refund sales tax to foreign visitors. A federal tax-free scheme is planned under the tax reform, and Rio de Janeiro state has approved a refund of its own sales tax (ICMS) for visitors, but neither was running in October 2026. The state scheme is meant for in-person purchases at registered stores, with a card issued abroad and a minimum of about R$ 114 per receipt in 2026. The federal scheme is expected to start in the second half of 2027. Keep receipts for your own records rather than for a refund.
The Fashion Mall is a few minutes from the villa, Shopping Leblon and Ipanema's streets about 15 minutes east, and the Barra malls about 15 to 20 minutes west. With the English-speaking driver arranged through Art de Vivre's concierge, you are dropped at the door and collected when you are done, which spares the group the parking queues.
A good split is one morning in Ipanema and Leblon, ending with lunch nearby, and one afternoon in Barra if anyone needs a bigger haul. The Fashion Mall covers the cinema, a play and the small things in between. Opening hours change with holidays and the season, and for cards, cash and tipping, see money and tipping in Rio.

Not yet. A federal tax-free scheme and a Rio de Janeiro state refund of sales tax (ICMS) have both been approved, but neither was in operation in October 2026.
Which Brazilian brands are worth buying in Rio?
Three well-known names are Osklen, founded in 1989 by Oskar Metsavaht; Farm Rio, founded in 1997 by Kátia Barros and Marcello Bastos; and Havaianas, the flip-flops made since 1962.
