Rio's 2027 year month by month: public holidays, Carnival and the Sambódromo nights, the Rio Open, the marathon, the book fair and the film festival. How this calendar works

This calendar lists the Rio dates for 2027 that official or reliable sources had confirmed by late October 2026. Where an event had not yet set its 2027 dates, it says so and gives the period of its most recent edition. Weekdays are given for the year stated.

Public holidays shape a trip more than people expect, since banks and the financial markets close on them. The national dates below follow ANBIMA's 2027 holiday calendar, and the city of Rio adds a municipal holiday and two state holidays of its own.

For the season itself, When to visit Rio covers the weather through the year, and New Year and Carnival in Rio covers the two biggest weeks in detail. Where a date was still unconfirmed, check again closer to your trip.

Long weekends

Several 2027 holidays sit next to a weekend. Carnival runs into Ash Wednesday, Good Friday makes a three-day Easter weekend and Corpus Christi falls on a Thursday. Independence Day, Nossa Senhora Aparecida and Finados all fall on a Tuesday, and the Proclamation of the Republic on a Monday.

On those weekends, book restaurants, the driver and any boat day early through the concierge. The Museu do Amanhã opens on Tuesdays and is free on national holidays, which makes it an easy plan for the three Tuesday holidays. Labour Day, the Dia Nacional de Zumbi e da Consciência Negra and Christmas Day all fall on Saturdays in 2027.

January

The year opens with Réveillon on the night of Thursday 31 December 2026. The city had not published its programme for that night by late October 2026, so the details here are from the previous turn of the year, into 2026: 13 stages, three of them in Copacabana, and a 12-minute display fired from 19 barges, with the main fireworks off Copacabana and fireworks at five points across the city in all. The city expected five million people at its stages, 2.5 million of them in Copacabana.

On that night, cars were kept out of Copacabana from 19:00 and all vehicles from 21:00, with the streets reopening at 5:00 on New Year's Day, so plan to be dropped off early. The details of that edition came out on 26 December 2025, so the plan for the turn into 2027 may appear only in the last days of the year.

New Year's Day, Friday 1 January, is a national holiday. On Wednesday 20 January the city stops again for the Dia de São Sebastião, a municipal holiday in Rio. January is one of the wetter months, with about 11 days of rain on the city's INMET record, so keep a plan for indoors.

February

Carnival Monday and Tuesday fall on 8 and 9 February 2027, and Ash Wednesday on 10 February, when the results of the samba school contest are read out. In Rio, Carnival Tuesday is a state holiday, and the Monday is normally an optional day off for public offices.

At the Sambódromo, the twelve schools of the Grupo Especial parade over three nights, four a night: Sunday 7, Monday 8 and Tuesday 9 February. In the order drawn at the Cidade do Samba on 16 April 2026, Sunday opens with União de Maricá and closes with Vila Isabel, Monday opens with Mocidade and closes with Imperatriz Leopoldinense, and Tuesday ends with Mangueira after Portela, Viradouro and Grande Rio. The six best-placed schools return for the Desfile das Campeãs on Saturday 13 February.

Tickets are sold through Ticketmaster. In the general sale that opened in August 2026, a night in the stands or the numbered chairs cost R$ 250, with half price at R$ 125, and the three-night Passaporte had already sold out. Prices change by sector and sale phase, so check Ticketmaster.

The same month brings the Rio Open, South America's only ATP 500 tennis tournament, from Saturday 13 to Sunday 21 February at the Jockey Club Brasileiro in Gávea. Tickets went on sale through Eventim in October 2026, at about R$ 70 to R$ 990 depending on the day, session and seat.

If you stay on after Carnival, Saturday 13 February brings the Desfile das Campeãs and the start of the Rio Open, so a second week in Rio can take in both. February also has fewer rainy days than January, about seven on the INMET record.

March and April

Easter comes early in 2027. Good Friday, 26 March, is a national holiday and Easter Sunday falls on 28 March. The Museu do Amanhã is free on national holidays, Good Friday included, and Museu do Amanhã and Praça Mauá has the rest of the port.

April has two holidays in one week. Tiradentes, a national holiday, falls on Wednesday 21 April, and the Dia de São Jorge, a state holiday in Rio de Janeiro, on Friday 23 April. Rainfall drops through these months, from about 136 mm in March to about 95 mm in April on the INMET record.

May and June

Labour Day, 1 May, falls on a Saturday. Corpus Christi follows on Thursday 27 May, a bank holiday on the national calendar.

The Maratona do Rio is timed for that long weekend. Its 25th edition runs from 27 to 30 May 2027, with 5 km, 10 km, half-marathon and marathon races, the Desafio Cidade Maravilhosa for runners who take on both the half and the full marathon, and the World Athletics Elite Label.

June is the month of the festas juninas, held across Brazil around three feast days: 13 June for Santo Antônio, 24 June for São João and 29 June for Saints Peter and Paul. Look out for bonfires, quadrilha dances and stalls selling pamonha, pé de moleque and quentão.

July to September

July and August are among the driest months: the city's INMET weather station averages about four days with rain in July and five in August. No major dated event in this calendar falls in those two months.

September is busier. Independence Day, Tuesday 7 September, is a national holiday, and the Bienal do Livro, Rio's book fair, holds its 23rd edition from Friday 3 to Sunday 12 September 2027; its venue had not been announced by October 2026, and the 2025 edition was held at Riocentro.

ArtRio, the contemporary art fair, is held in September at Marina da Glória. Its 16th edition ran from 16 to 20 September 2026 with 78 galleries, and the 2027 dates had not been announced by late October 2026.

No Rock in Rio is planned for 2027. The festival's most recent Rio edition ran over two weekends in September 2026, and the organisers have confirmed the next one for September 2028.

October and November

Tuesday 12 October is the national holiday of Nossa Senhora Aparecida, Brazil's patron saint. The Festival do Rio, the city's film festival, is held in October: its 28th edition ran from 1 to 11 October 2026, with 359 titles across 28 venues, commercial cinemas and free screening spaces together, and the 2027 dates had not been announced by late October 2026.

November has three national holidays. Finados, the day of the dead, falls on Tuesday 2 November, and the Proclamation of the Republic, which marks 15 November 1889, on Monday 15 November. The Dia Nacional de Zumbi e da Consciência Negra, a national holiday since a law signed on 21 December 2023, falls on Saturday 20 November.

December

Christmas Day, Saturday 25 December, is a national holiday. At the villa, the private chef can shop the morning markets and cook Christmas Eve dinner for the table of 12. Ask the concierge early.

The year closes with Réveillon on Friday 31 December, the turn into 2028. The city publishes each edition's stages, fireworks and road closures shortly before the night, so check the official programme in the last week of the year. Last time, the metro needed a special Réveillon pass, R$ 15 for the return trip and sold until 18:00 on the 31st. New Year and Carnival in Rio has the practical side.
